Essay Reflection- Julius Caesar and Alchemist

Ideas and Content

For my essays, I have improved from my older essay which was the alchemist. Now I know how to choose better quotes and ideas. I chose quotes that were appropriate ideas and content. Some of the quotes that I chose from before are now better. Such as before I chose “Well then I'll be a shepherd!” Which was not really important but now I chose some quotes that are better than before. Such as the quote about how Julius Caesar worked on before. I include interesting and relevent details in the new julius Caesar essay while my old alchemist essay I was not that great in.I can improve my writing by asking for more help from the teacher. Such as asking if my quotes are relevant to the writing.


First in the alchemist I had an ok interesting hook to grab my reader's attention. I used a quote that was important and unique to start with. My thesis statement was a bit ok too. It clears up the essay by a bit because I talked about most of what i am about to say in the essay. My body paragraphs did not really all begin with clear topic sentenses. Sometimes I just gave in the quote and did not describe it really well. All in all my alchemist organization was ok but I need to work on describing the quotes and summarizing my conclusions better.

Personal Growth

* Do you note any improvement between your Alchemist essay and your Julius Caesar essay? Why or why not?

Yes a bit more improvement in some areas. I improved on finding some right quotes and talking about it. But I need to be more organized and have less grammer mistakes. My piece of writing also does not flow that well. So I would need to improve on that. I worked on planning out the Alchemist essay but it was not enough. Next time I need to ask the teacher for more help.

Adapting to another world

Peter Dut is a young Sudanese orphan. He lived in the infamous civil wars in Sudan. Surviving heat, drought, hunger, lion attacks and even militia gunfire, Peter reaches a refugee camp in Kenya. After surviving the war Peter and many other survivors lived in peace inside the warm huts of the refugee camps, an area far away from technology. They are now called "The lost boys" Because they were mostly orphans. Peter and many of his friends were chosen to go to Houston, Texas where they will work and live in harmony. To him and his friends this journey was like going to heaven. Peter and his friends will experience the difficulties that they will have to go through while assimilating into American culture.

Peter Dut confronted the American culture in many ways. He had to live in a different strange culture, earn money and fight for a better education. Peter and his friends had to live in a new world, a place where there is violence, racism and technology. On the first day at his apartment he starts to use electrical appliances like the lights, ovens and fridge. Throughout the first few months staying in Houston, he starts to understand the challenges living in America. There were many terrible people lurking around his neighbourhood. He is stressed by the fact that the bad people consists racist Americans. They were scarred of him, the really dark African being. Peter worked in a mall where he had to move the shopping baskets. He was chosen to do that because he had dark skin which meant because he’s African he can endure more heat than white people. Besides of the racism issues hanging loose in the streets, there were also violent gang members stealing money from Peter and his friends. The money meant a lot to Peter and his friends it was for his sister in Sudan and also for his food and apartment rents. Peter is frustrated with all these issues going around him that he had to turn and adjust to the American culture in a new way. Peter seeks for better education.

Peter deals his problem by moving out of Houston and entering Kansas. There he enrolls in High School to be able to have a greater future. At school he meets friends that help him out in classes. They go to church, play basketball and study in school. Peter works hard to adapt and fit in the American culture. Peter’s ability to work hard and not give up has helped him take a big step to adapt to the American culture.

Caesar.

Decius persuades Caesar to go to the capital.

Decius persuades Caesar to go to the capital. Decius persuades Caesar by changing the interpretation of the dream Calpurnia had. Calpurnia’s interpretation was that Caesar will die in the capital while Decius interpretation was about how great and important Caesar is to Rome. Caesar’s arrogant gets the best of him and he changes his mind and heads off to the capital.

This passage is significant because, Caesar characterization is seen really well, such as his arrogance. You can see his arrogance because Caesar thinks of himself very much as the greatest being in rome. He refers to himself in 3^rd person such as “ Shall Caesar send a lie?” Another reason why this passage is significant is that it foreshadows Caesars death because if Caesar heads to the Capital he will be assassinated. This would also be considered a great dramatic irony. Because we know Caesar will die.

To be afeard to tell greybeards the truth?
Decius, go tell them Caesar will not come.

Most mighty Caesar, let me know some cause,
Lest I be laugh'd at when I tell them so.

CAESAR
The cause is in my will: I will not come;
That is enough to satisfy the senate.
But for your private satisfaction,
Because I love you, I will let you know:
Calpurnia here, my wife, stays me at home:
She dreamt to-night she saw my statua,
Which, like a fountain with an hundred spouts,
Did run pure blood: and many lusty Romans
Came smiling, and did bathe their hands in it:
And these does she apply for warnings, and portents,

DECIUS BRUTUS
This dream is all amiss interpreted;

Your statue spouting blood in many pipes,

For tinctures, stains, relics and cognizance.
This by Calpurnia's dream is signified.

Their minds may change. Besides, it were a mock

'Lo, Caesar is afraid'?
